Police Department FREE GUNLOCKS NOW AVAILABLE The Brandon Police Department, in cooperation with Project Childsafe (a safety program developed by the national Shooting Sports Foundation and funded by a U.S. Department grant), has received 600 cable-style gunlocks to be distributed throughout the Brandon/Forestdale community FREE to individuals who own guns - especially to families with children. Each lock has a coated 15-inch cable with a keyed lock at one end that can be used on a variety of revolvers, automatic pistols, auto-loading and pump-action shotguns, as well as bolt-action rifles. Each lock includes a manual with instructions on how to use the lock on various firearms. The lock, which works like a bicycle cable lock, is threaded through the firearm's action rendering the firearm inoperable. The locks, in combination with accompanying educational materials, are intended to promote safe handling and secure storage practices among all firearms owners. Locks may be picked up at the Brandon Police Department weekdays, 8:30 am - 7 pm, while supplies last. Using a gunlock is just one of several recommended precautions for safe gun storage. Other steps include: * Storing all guns - UNLOADED - in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case. * Storing ammunition in a locked area, SEPARATE from firearms. * Rechecking firearms on occasion to confirm that they are still unloaded. Members of the Brandon Police Department may be reached via E-mail at Branpd@sover.net or at the departments non-emergency phone number, [802] 247-0222. Chief Lonnie Hatman |
